Supreme Grand Priory Convocation at the Grand Hotel Excelsior - April 2010
The Supreme Grand Priory of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem was convened on the 25th of April 2010 at the Grand Hotel Excelsior under the chairmanship of the newly elected Grand Marshal of the Order, H.E. Steven Groeneveld GCLJ. The Supreme Grand Priory meeting was planned to be presided by the Supreme Grand Prior himself, H.E. Richard Comyns of Ludston GCLJ GCMLJ. However, the Icelandic volcanic ash phenomenon and the subsequent disruption of the major European airlines meant that a number of Grand Officers and the deputations of Scotland and England could not be physically present for this convocation.
A number of Grand Officers and representatives of Grand Priories were present for the Supreme Grand Priory meeting including delegations from the Grand Priory of Malta, Gozo, South Africa, Ukraine, Austria, the Corps San Lazare International, the Grand Priory of the International Lazarites, the Commandery of Tripolitania and the head of delegation of Kazakhstan. The Grand Chancellor, Chev. Max J Ellul GCLJ GCMLJ opened the convocation by giving the assembly a detailed speech on the present status of the Order and its Hospitaller work throughout the countries and regions in which it is represented.
Representatives of the Grand Priories then gave an in-depth presentation of the Order's work in their respective jurisdictions. Special attention was given to the extensive hands-on work in aid of the needy, the homeless and the emarginated which the Order is constantly providing in the jurisdiction of South Africa. The representatives of the Grand Priory of Austria, together with the Chairman of the Corps San Lazare International, also gave a very interesting presentation of the setup of the Austrian operations and its fruitful work in its jurisdiction. The Chairman of the Corps San Lazare International, Chevalier Wolfgang Steinhardt, then presented a banner of the Corps to the Grand Marshal of the Order and also presented the brevet of Office in the rank of General of the Corps San Lazare International to the Grand Chancellor so as to create further synergy between the constantly growing Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus and the praiseworthy international work of the CSLI.
This was the first meeting of the Supreme Grand Priory which included the services of simultaneous translation from the English language to the Russian language due to the presence of a number of Russian speaking dignitaries hailing from the Ukraine and from Kazakhstan.
The Supreme Grand Priory meeting was closed by means of a keynote speech by the Grand Marshal of the Order who thanked the officers and Grand Officers present for their constant, and voluntary, work in Hospitaller and philanthropic aid throughout the regions. Chev. Groeneveld also saluted the officers and Grand Officers who could not be physically present for this convocation but who were all represented by proxy and thanked them as well for their hard work. The Supreme Grand Priory then unanimously voted for the office of the Grand Chancellory to continue with its planned preparations for the consecration of further Grand Priories throughout 2010 in North and South America and in Europe.
