Grand Priory of Sicily: 750th Anniversary Celebrations of the Colleggio S.S. Salvatore of Enna (May 2011)
During the 14th and the 22nd of May 2011, the city of Enna in Sicily celebrated a unique anniversary in the religious, cultural and traditional history of the area. The week marked the 750th anniversary since the founding of the Confraternity and College of the Holy Saviour of Enna, a religious confraternity which owes its foundation in the Middle Ages to the crusading knights themselves.
The celebrations were organized by the Confraternity itself and with the assistance of Enna Mayor Paolo Garofalo. A delegation of the Order led by the Grand Chancellor, Chev. Massimo J. Ellul, fully participated in the week long events of the Confraternity, members of which also form the Grand Priory of Sicily of the Order. The Bishop of Piazza Armerina, His Grace Monsignor M. Pennisi and the Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, His Grace Monignor A. Brambilla were also present in most of the events within this anniversary week and members of the Order met with both Monsignors on a number of occasions. In the Chiaramonte Palace of Enna, a symposium was alos organized which dealt with the historical aspects of such an anniversary and also included guest speakers of the caliber of Dottoressa Di Biasi, the President of the College of Rectors of Enna and the regional President of the Italian confederation of Confraternities.
The highlight of the 750th anniversary celebrations for the Order was indeed the investiture of the Grand Priory of Sicily in the Church dedicated to the S.S. Salvatore and which was the center of all the activities and events during the week in question.
