Saint Lazarus Foundation Day in Tarxien (May 30, 2009)

The Grand Commandery of Malta, together with the Tarxien Local Council, organized yet another full day event in Tarxien, an old town in the South of Malta. The event was coordinated by Chevalier Paul Farrugia KLJ CMLJ, who is also the Mayor of Tarxien.

The event started at 0900hrs with a march-past of the officers and members of the Order, together with the Mayor and Councilors of Tarxien, through the quaint roads of the town and which ended at the town square. The march also included a full contingent of the Tarxien Scout Group, ably assisted by the musicians from the Fgura Scout Group. The Tarxien Scout Group then assembled in the town square and each member was individually given the shoulder patch of the Order as an acknowledgement that the Tarxien Scout Group is yet another Group patronized by the Order of Saint Lazarus in Malta.

The beautiful ceremony also included speeches from the Grand Chancellor, the Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Malta, Chevalier Charles Caruana KLJ OMLJ and the Mayor of Tarxien, Chevalier Paul Farrugia KLJ CMLJ. After the ceremony, the large deputation of Knights and Dames of the Order marched to the old Town Castle where a solemn ceremony of tree planting was also done in order to promote the Order’s assistance in landscaping the towns and villages of Malta with a Lazarite presence.

The event was then transferred to the area in front of the office of the Tarxien Local Council where the Mayor of Tarxien and Dame Christabel Ellul DLJ, in the absence of the Grand Chancellor, unveiled a commemorative plaque in front of the Council Office commemorating this beautiful event.
