Uganda – Make a Difference to Children (January 2019)
The Order of Saint Lazarus endorses and assists various NGOs working hard in the African continent in order to make lives better. One of these NGOs is Whisper, which is very active in Uganda. The Order's liaison officer with Whisper, Confrere Richard Bollo, sent us this update for the month of January:
WHISPER'S HOSPITAL REPORT FOR JANUARY 2019
In January, we were able to register 1047 patients. This also involves patients from our newly introduced adult consultation and maternity. Saving the many lives of Ugandan children and adults through providing high quality health services is our number one goal. This was a busy month, we received a total of 953 patients in the children’s wing, many lives were saved in different regions all thanks to our beloved donors.
13 malnourished patients were registered. 10 patients were managed and recovered well for discharge. The other three patients were referred due to PTB (Pulmonary Tuberculosis). Unlike the past cases, last month’s malnutrition cases were due to poor feeding practices for infants and parent negligence, leaving young children with relatives who cannot support themselves financially. These innocent souls survive on only one meal a day hence leading to malnutrition.
219 patients were transfused in January which is more compared to the month of December. There was shortage of blood during the late period of January, but we managed to obtain enough to save the lives of many patients.
We thank everyone for their contribution towards our charity organisation.
ONE OF THE LIFE SAVING MOMENTS AT WHISPER
One of the mothers referred from Jinja regional referral having had a complicated Emergency C-section in a certain Hospital. She over bled and became unconscious. The whole district had no blood, they moved to different health centers but all in vain until one of the health workers informed her caretakers about our Hospital. She was still unconscious when they reached the Hospital. Her caretakers feared she was already dead. Our emergency team resuscitated her and controlled the bleeding. After approximately two hours of transfusion, she became conscious and gained energy. Her family was so grateful for the wonderful work done by the maternity team. We always go an extra mile to make sure that we obtain enough blood for any emergency. Right now this mother is doing well and living a happy life. Support us to help such mothers out there. https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/stop-ugandan-women-and-children-dying-at-childbirth/
THE MALNOURISHED CHILDREN
This is one of the 13 malnourished children received in January. This litte Angel had severe malnutrition with oedematous. For more explanation about oedematous. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edema). The baby was put on nutritional rehabilitation, he became better and was discharged. Whisper's Magical children's Hospital is saving so many malnourished children especially in the Eastern region of Uganda. We are glad that this baby is doing fine. Help us to save more malnourished children by donating to our malnutrition project. https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/help-a-malnourished-child-with-whispers-hospital/
WHISPER'S EMERGENCY WARD
One of the emergencies we received in January. This little angel was brought to Whisper's Magical Hospital in a very critical condition. He was at the point of death, semi conscious, severely anemic, had neonatal sepsis and haemolytic disease of new born. He was put under close monitoring. Thanks to the emergency team this life was saved. We are here to make a difference and save the lives of the most vulnerable children in Uganda. https://www.globalgiving.org/donate/28855/whisper/
