Serbia – NATO bombings on civilians put in the limelight by St. Lazarus activist (October 2018)

The Grand Priory of Serbia includes a number of distinguished personalities who have made a name for themselves locally and in international for. One of them is the Chevalier Srdjan Aleksic KLJ, attorney at law from Nis, Serbia. His law office is one of the largest ones in Serbia, with around 30,000 cases, mainly focusing on the protection of human rights.

His most important project at this moment concerns compensation for the damages suffered by Serbian people from the NATO bombing of former Yugoslavia in 1999. This particularly focuses on health issues that civilians have endured and still endure, such as cancer and leukaemia, on one side, and ecological disaster on the other side, both of which are a result of the use of depleted uranium (DU) by NATO forces during the aforementioned bombing.

In fact, the first International symposium “Consequences of bombing of the FR of Yugoslavia with depleted uranium in 1999”, was held on June 17th-19th 2018, where a total of 27 scientific papers were presented. Presenters came from Italy, Germany, Cyprus, China, Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The symposium was a great success. A documentary on this subject was commissioned and one can view it online on the following link: https://uranium238.rs/.

Legal proceedings concerning this issue would be quite complicated and problems vary from jurisdiction issues, statute of limitations, establishing the causal link between use of DU and damages suffered by civilians and so on. For these reasons we are aware that the task ahead is difficult and full of obstacles, which is why every help would be greatly appreciated. We were recently contacted by several colleagues from different parts of the world, most lately Israel and Italy, who offered their help and cooperation. On behalf of the Supreme Grand Priory, we wish all the best for our Lazarite brother in his endeavour to legally aid and assist the stricken people of the region.
