Puerto Rico - SMOKH/PANAM School of Monastic Medicine Officially Licensed (March 2020)

We are thrilled and pleased to announce, that on March 13, 2020, the first licensed school of monastic medicine has been granted a full license in the western world by a government municipality, sponsored by an active member of our Order, who is also the elected Mayor of Lares in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and briefly called Porto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida.

An archipelago among the Greater Antilles, located between the Dominican Republic and the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico includes the eponymous main island and several smaller islands, such as Mona, Culebra, and Vieques. The capital and most populous city is San Juan. The territory's total population is approximately 3.4 million, more than 21 U.S. states. Spanish and English are the official languages of the executive branch of government, though Spanish predominates.

With this formal application, graduates of our university will be fully licensed by the Puerto Rican government. The university campus is located at Calle 2 Dr. Pedro Albizua Campos, just next to the Mayoral building of Lares. The first official term of the School within the Universidad will start on Oct. 1, 2020. Pre-term courses for the summer of this year 2020 will be announced soon.

What started as a goodwill mission in Lares in Nov. 2018, has finally reached consummation and is indeed the first phase of the Order’s investment in education in Puerto Rico.

The Supreme Grand Priory would like to publicly thank the Deputy Grand Chancellor-Elect, HE Charles McWilliams, who is also the leader of the Sacred Medical Order of the Knights of Hope. SMOKH are fully fledged members of the Order of St. Lazarus and have been in the forefront of Hospitaller initiatives in the Americas and the Caribbean. Special thanks and appreciation must also go to the Grand Hospitaller-Elect of the Order, the Chevalier Benjamin Aguieras, who was the driving force for such a breakthrough in this particular jurisdiction.
