In July 2013, in a simple ceremony in Washington DC, Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie joined the Companionate of Merit of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem with the highest rank possible for a civilian: as Knight Grand Cross of Merit of the Order.

Chevalier Christopher Buck, from the US Grand Priory, was selected by the Supreme Grand Priory to give the instrument of appointment and accompanying Lazarite insignia to His Imperial Highness, thus cementing months of close cooperation between the Order of Saint Lazarus and the various foundations chaired by His Imperial Highness and which are specifically set up to aid and assist Ethiopian projects in the latter region.
The Grand Chancellery of the Order duly appointed Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie as Honorary Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Ethiopia.

Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie (born on 14 June 1960 in Addis Ababa) is the only son of Prince Sahle Selassie of Ethiopia and Princess Mahisente Habte Mariam. He is the grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, and furthermore of Dejazmach Habte Mariam Gebre-Igziabiher, the heir to the former Welega kingdom of Leqa Naqamte, and later served as governor of Welega province. Currently the prince is ninth in the line of succession to the vacant imperial throne.

Prince Ermias currently serves as the President of the Crown Council of Ethiopia in exile. The Crown Council has pursued a mission devoted to the promotion of a cultural and humanitarian role. Prince Ermias is also patron of the Haile Selassie Fund for Children in Need which continues to sponsor student scholarships, and the St. George of Lalibela Foundation.

Prince Ermias was first married to Gelila Fesseha, the daughter of a former Ethiopian Supreme Court Justice, and by her is the father of twin sons, Prince Sahle Selassie Ermias (known as Christian), and Prince Fesseha Tsion (known as Rufael). Prince Ermias and his first wife later divorced. In March 2011, Prince Ermias married Saba Kebede. The Prince and his wife live in the Metro Washington DC area.
