Egypt – Our Companion of Merit guest speaker at UNHCR Forum (March 2019)

 

Chaker Khazaal is a Palestinian-Canadian reporter, speaker, former Editor-in-Chief of StepFeed and YallaFeed, Huffington Post contributor, and author of Tale of Tala (2017) and the Confessions of a War Child trilogy (2013-2015).

Born in 1987 as a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon, Chaker grew up in Bourj El Barajneh camp in Beirut. At a young age, he participated in several local plays and starred in the Palestinian film Sugar of Jaffa. He later immigrated to Canada. Being one of four recipients of the Global Leader of Tomorrow Award, Chaker studied at York University in Toronto and graduated in 2009 with a B.A. in International Development Studies.

The Order’s American Grand Priory inducted Khazaal in the presitigious civilian Companionate of Merit of the Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem and continues to monitor his constant work in various countries across the globe.

During the month of March, Chaker was a guest speaker discussing UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s creative and sustainable methods of aid for refugees at the Creative Industry Summit in Cairo, Egypt.

Chaker dwelt at length on the following initiatives in the area:
1. Use of drones for mapping
2. Solar energy for electricity
3. Phone apps, technology, etc to increase inclusivity and global awareness.
